Parcel lockers are gaining popularity worldwide, and experts believe this is linked to their convenience.

“If you look at cell phones. That’s why they’re making a folding phone. It’s smaller, it’s more convenient if it’s in your pocket,” says Aaron Leach from Bobbox Group.

Speaking exclusively to Locate2u Leach says parcel lockers are gaining popularity over its popularity in modern society. “I don’t want to be waiting for the courier.”

According to DHL, these smart parcel lockers are “quietly transforming e-commerce logistics.”

Apart from being convenient, it’s also environmentally friendly.

Lockers vs. Couriers: The convenience factor

If a courier company promises to deliver a parcel from 8 am to 5 pm, many people can’t wait at home all day.

Real-time tracking and preferred delivery times have played a significant role in alleviating these issues. However, DHL acknowledges that “more flexibility is needed.”

“If I have a quick lunch break at work, I can quickly run out to fetch my parcel [at the locker],” says Leach.

Are parcel lockers big enough for any parcel?

Smart parcel lockers can be manufactured and designed specifically for a retailer’s needs.

These lockers can be redesigned for a fashion retailer who requires bigger locker boxes to fit garments and shoe boxes.

“We could change the sizing of a locker to meet their needs,” says Leach.

He’s noticing this trend, especially in Europe. “Depending on where they place the lockers in Europe, especially if it’s an office park.”

Bonus features of parcel lockers

Parcel lockers can be accessed 24/7 and do not require extra security or personnel to wait around for customers to be assisted. The customer receives a unique password, which is then used to open the locker space.

The concept has been around for over a decade but has been gaining popularity in recent months.

It’s now being placed at gyms, park stations, and office blocks to make it easier for customers to collect their parcels.
