More than half (60%) of Americans are concerned about porch piracy this holiday season. The US holiday sales are expected to reach a massive $240.8 billion this year.
Online holiday shopping remains strong and popular due to its convenience and added benefits, such as staying out of the shops and avoiding overspending.
Nearly two-thirds of US citizens (65%) are planning to shop exclusively online for the majority of their holiday shopping.
This is according to a new Harris Poll commissioned by packaging logistics firm Position Imaging. This survey was conducted online, and more than 2,000 adults participated.
Businesses can benefit by improving security measures
The respondents say 63% would be more likely to place online orders if more secure delivery options were available.
This is an ideal opportunity for businesses to step up their security measures.
“The combination of increased e-commerce activity, high-value holiday purchases, and the lack of secure delivery solutions creates a perfect storm for opportunistic thieves,” says Ned Hill, founder and CEO of Position Imaging.
“Longer delivery times and increased visibility of package thefts on social media only add to consumer anxiety over getting their packages delivered safely and on time.”
How businesses can increase security by cutting delivery time
With customers flagging late parcel deliveries as a security concern, a business must look at ways to optimize speed and accuracy without spending more.
Here’s what you can do:
- Optimized delivery routes: Using route optimization can help drivers minimize unnecessary time behind the steering wheel. It helps drivers find the shortest and most effective path.
- Reduce planning time: Less time spent on planning means lower labor costs and quicker response times to customer demands.
- Delivery driver coordination: Better utilization means fewer vehicles are needed for the same number of deliveries. This reduces costs associated with vehicle maintenance and fuel.

Customers targeted online and at home
Amidst these concerns raised by consumers about porch piracy, online shoppers should also be more vigilant.
New research shows that 90% of Americans are targeted by digital scammers.
F-Secure’s U.S. Scam Intelligence & Impact Report has also found that one in every four US citizens believed they fell victim to a scam, while three in 10 lost money to cybercrime.
Businesses are urged to step up security measures to help keep online shoppers safe.
