As the threat of a potential US ban looms, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew vows to fight back against what he describes as a “ban on you and your voice.” Millions of American users are rallying behind him, setting the stage for a high-stakes legal battle.
In his passionate call to action, Chew vowed to fight the TikTok ban in court. He called on loyal users to speak out, which resulted in an outpouring of support from the community.
TikTok CEO’s rallying cry
The video has been viewed more than 15 million times in the 20 hours it’s been online. Addressing users of the platform, Chew said the ban would take “away from you and the 170 million Americans who find community and connection on our platform.”
“Make no mistake, this is a ban – a ban on TikTok and a ban on you and your voice. Politicians may say otherwise but don’t get confused. Many who sponsor the bill admit that a ban is the ultimate goal,” he adds.
He described the move as a “disappointing moment,” since the freedom of expression on his platform “reflect the same American values that make the United States a beacon of freedom.”
“Rest assured, we aren’t going anywhere. We are confident and we will keep fighting for your rights in the courts. The facts and the Constitution are on our side and we expect to prevail again.”
Support from the TikTok community
Thousands of people added their thoughts, with creators saying “In Shou we trust,” and “We ride at dawn.” One user begged, “Please Mr Shou, don’t give up on us,” while another said: “The Shou must go on!”
Another echoed a common thread for many users who make a livelihood on the platform: “TikTok is the only platform I’ve found success with for my art. I hope it isn’t taken away or I won’t be able to reach anyone anymore.”

In a press release dated 4 April, TikTok cited an Oxford Economics report, showing how the social media platform contributed US$24.2 billion to the US’s gross domestic product (GDP) in 2023.
The report states: “TikTok serves as a hub for a diverse array of individuals and businesses across the United States, contributing to a vibrant online community. Among these, small and midsize businesses (SMBs) are well-positioned to benefit from TikTok’s algorithm.”
Impact on TikTok businesses
Chew said the legal proceedings won’t impact the current plans to “invest and innovate to keep our community vibrant, exciting, and safe.”
He called on those seven million business owners to share their stories. “If you have a story about how TikTok impacts your life, we’d love for you to share it, to showcase exactly what we’re fighting for.”
Thousands have done exactly that:
“I can’t say this enough – this extraordinary, diverse community is what makes TikTok so special, what makes it matter, and what makes it meaningful. And we’ll keep working to ensure you will always have the opportunity, the safety, and the freedom to enjoy all TikTok has to offer.”
