Amazon is expanding its footprint in Australia with yet another logistics center, this time at Melbourne’s Ravenhall.

This marks the retail giant’s 13th center, which means two things: improved distribution efficiency and increased inventory flexibility.

With more logistics centers, Amazon is reducing the shipping distances to customers, which means faster delivery times.

It also allows for better coverage of a wide geographic area, which will ensure that more remote regions can be serviced more efficiently.

Packages are transported to the Ravenhall site from Amazon fulfillment centers and are then picked up by Amazon Flex delivery partners to be delivered directly to customers.

But it’s also a win for inventory flexibility. Amazon can now spread inventory across more locations, reducing stock outs in specific areas. That means they can optimize fulfillment from the closest center.

More centers allow Amazon to hold buffer stock at multiple sites.

Contractors are aiming to finish the  $7 million site by late 2025. On the bright side, it will also create jobs for more than 1,000 construction workers and 200 when it’s operational.

City of Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik says Amazon’s decision to build a new delivery station in Ravenhall emphasizes the “fantastic economic and employment opportunities the city of Melton provides to industry.”

Dexus is delivering the 8800sq meter site for Amazon. This is said to be its fourth logistics site in Victoria. Three other sites are in Melbourne and Geelong.

The location of the logistics center is prime. It’s near the proposed Western Intermodal Freight Terminal.

Amazon Australia operations director Sandra McNeil says this new center unlocks massive potential for the retailer.

“The Ravenhall logistics site enables us to grow our contribution to the local economy through the creation of jobs and flexible earning opportunities, and we look forward to building on our strong relationship with the local community.”
