The electric vehicle (EV) sector in Australia just kicked up a gear. eLumina has officially opened Australia’s first battery factory on the Gold Coast, with production set to begin in 2025, Australasian Transport News reports.
The $20 million facility will manufacture both community lithium batteries and EV chargers, marking a national milestone. It is expected to produce 300 units annually.
Why does this matter? This factory can set a new standard, encouraging further innovation and investment in green technologies across the country.

Electric vehicle market in Australia
Statista reports the electric vehicle market in Australia is estimated to experience an annual growth rate (CAGR) of 65% in the next five years.
“One of the key trends in the Australian electric vehicles market is the increasing availability of charging infrastructure,” reads the report.
The report adds that the Australian government and private companies have been investing in the installation of charging stations across the country, making it more convenient for electric vehicle owners to charge their vehicles.
In November 2023, the government announced a rollout of 50 EV chargers at transport hubs in Sydney.
Why go electric?
There are many great benefits to going electrical. These include:
- Fuel saving: Cost of Diesel and petrol are higher than running an electric-powered car.
- Better for the environment – EVs help reduce emissions, keeping a city’s air cleaner.
- The ultimate ride – EVs are easy to maintain and offer a smooth ride.
Across the pond in the UK, companies like Royal Mail have added more electric vehicles to its fleet. The postal service is adding another 2,100 electric vans (EVs) to its fleet over the next year as part of the company’s plans to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
