Mobile internet access has hit a record high of 5.45 billion users worldwide. It amounts to 67% of the global population, according to Statista

A massive 63.7% of those who have access to the internet use social media. Social commerce is booming, and that’s why more collaborations like TikTok with Amazon are so significant. 

Connecting billions of people worldwide

The internet is a core source of information and research. Customers turn to the internet to search for products and read reviews before they go to the store to hold the item in their hands and make up their minds about it. 

Knowing that 63.7% of those with internet access also use social media shows great potential for entrepreneurs and marketing strategists. Many try to use TikTok to build a brand and community, while others hope to find new customers. 

TikTok has gained massive attention over the last few years. Companies are heavily investing in marketing on the social media platform. To date, it’s been downloaded more than 4.7 billion times globally.

Countries with high internet usage 

Asia has the most significant online users worldwide, just under 3 billion. According to Statista Europe, it ranked second, with around 750 million internet users. 

As of April 2023, 99% of the population in Norway, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates used the internet. North Korea was the opposite. It had no internet usage penetration among the general population and ranked last worldwide.

Gender disparities in internet usage

According to Statista, men use the internet more than women worldwide. Female internet users account for 63%, 6% less than men. 

The gender disparity in internet usage was bigger in the Arab States and Africa, with a difference of around 10%.

Users’ income level played an important factor in whether they had access to the internet. “92% of the population of the countries with high income reportedly used the Internet, as opposed to only 26% of the low-income markets.
