China’s parcel delivery has ballooned, with more than 80 billion parcels handled in the first half of 2024. This is expected to result in a year-on-year growth of around 23%. Its express delivery has seen a whopping jump of almost 15%.
According to China Daily, this has been attributed to efforts to improve the rate of parcels sent between domestic and international markets. The “going global” initiative has been paying off. This has strengthened the international parcel logistics system.
A new record
The country’s parcel delivery sector has set a new record by handling nearly 15 billion consignments in May 2024.
This is what China’s government believes contributed to success:
- The expansion of service networks to rural areas.
- There’s been an investment in cold-chain logistics transportation.
- It improved service quality in rural areas.
- It also promoted the scale of parcel delivery business in rural areas.
Impact on economy
This is a massive achievement, as the parcel delivery sector is an excellent parameter to show how China’s economy is growing.
The progress made during the first six months of 2024 has supported the online economy. This has also boosted the country’s economic and social development.
Expanding network
The expansion of the network has given farmers and entrepreneurs in rural areas a chase to sell their products to the international market. This initiative has boosted support for urban and rural areas.
China parcel delivery: 120 billion in 2023
In 2023, China reached a record high of 120 billion parcels handled in 12 months. This was a record set out, which it achieved by November.
Instead of delivering 10 million parcels a year, it delivered that exact figure on average each month.
Reasons for increased business
Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, HSBC, believes there are more internet users now than ever. Therefore, more users are exploring online shopping for the first time.
One of China’s dominant e-commerce players, Alibaba, manages a cross-country network of delivery firms processing up to 30 million items daily through Cainiao.
Limitations to shops in lower-tier cities also lead to more online shopping for variety and options.
