Australia Post has expanded its next-day delivery service, Australia Post Metro, to include Adelaide. This service offers eligible retailers and their customers enhanced speed and reliability for online shopping.
The expansion comes in response to Adelaide’s ongoing embrace of e-commerce, with a notable year-on-year growth in online purchases. Online shopping in Adelaide has seen a 15.2% increase compared to 2019, with nearly 500,000 households making online purchases in the past year.
Why does this matter? Faster delivery times meet the growing customer demand for quick and reliable service, enhancing overall customer satisfaction and loyalty.
Customers want faster service
Gary Starr, Australia Post’s executive general manager for Parcel, Post, and e-commerce Services, said that next-day delivery is becoming more important because customers want faster service when shopping online.
Asendia, a company that offers a range of international e-commerce and mail delivery services released its 2024 ‘market watch’ which shows the Australian market is booming.
The report emphasizes the strong adoption of online shopping among Australians. She notes that Australian consumers’ confidence in online shopping solutions makes the country a highly attractive e-commerce market.
“We already have some of the country’s largest retailers using the Australia Post Metro service covering the lifestyle, fashion, beauty and FMCG space, with more retailers coming online every month. This new service provides a more agile, flexible delivery option as we head into our busiest time of year,” says Starr.
In February, the postal service introduced Saturday delivery for customers in Melbourne.

AusPost innovates for parcel delivery
In November, AusPost launched an automatic parcel locker service. Missed delivery parcels will be placed in a free 24/7 parcel locker within one kilometer of the customer’s address.
Customers will be notified via the AusPost app or SMS that their parcel has been placed in a secure locker. The package can be collected at a convenient time by the recipient. If the parcel is not collected within 48 hours, AusPost will take it to the nearest post office for collection.
Customers with a MyPost account or the AusPost app can already register to have their parcels delivered at no extra cost to any parcel lockers convenient to them instead of their home or workplace.
