Maersk’s cold chain facility at Ruakura Superhub in Hamilton has won the CBRE Industrial Property Award last week at New Zealand’s 2024 Property Industry Awards. The ward-winning site is located next to the new SH1 dual carriageway, the key transport corridor between Hamilton and Auckland.
The site was constructed by Apollo Projects the facility provides 18,000m2 of cold storage which can house over 21,000 pallets of cold chain products. The fully convertible temperature-controlled space can accommodate temperatures ranging from -25°C to 15°C.
Andrew Evans, chief judge at the property industry awards says the facility will have a big impact on productivity. “The site can send freight directly to a ship in either Auckland or Tauranga via the inland port, via rail or via road. Overall, it means taking approximately 6,000 trucks a year off the road.”
Benefits of Maersk logistics capabilities
What are the benefits of the new facility’s landside logistic capabilities? The facility will use landside logistics to handle more imported and exported goods, benefiting New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific region.
At the time the facility was opened, Maersk’s CEO Vincent Clerc said: “New Zealand has long played a vital role in the global supply chain from dairy, meat to seafood and fruits, the primary industry sector to drive the development of the country’s economy.”
Enhance supply chain, boosts imports and exports
The site links the ports of Auckland and Tauranga providing a supply chain for Maersk customers and increases the volume of possible imports and exports to and from New Zealand.
The expansion of the company’s product solutions into the cold store segment also presents a significant opportunity for customers to benefit from a state-of-the-art facility and help transform the New Zealand logistics landscape and connect and simplify customer’s supply chains.
