After 42 years at one of the world’s largest parcel companies, FedEx (NYSE: FDX), its executive vice president, Mark Allen, is retiring. He joined in 1982, the same year the first online marketplace, Boston Computer Exchange, opened its e-commerce business.

Allen witnessed the industry’s massive online purchasing boost when influential e-commerce marketplaces Amazon and eBay launched in 1995.

During his tenure at FedEx, Allen has directed international commercial and aviation negotiations and handled various corporate governance and operations matters. He has served in roles worldwide, including Toronto, Hong Kong, and Brussels.

FedEx history

FedEx began its fast delivery services in the seventies. It started with creating an airline to solve the logistics challenges businesses face. In 1973, operations began with picking and delivering the first overnight packages.

Allen was there to witness the company’s historic moment. He served in several leadership roles and assumed his current role as executive vice president in 2017.

His time at the helm will be remembered for his aviation negotiations and government relations. He’s served in roles worldwide, including in Hong Kong and Brussels.

Departing FedEx

Allen will continue to hold the fort until the end of September when he will move to a senior advisor position until the end of 2024. This is to ensure a “seamless transition” to his successor.

Hailed a “key member of the leadership team,” Mark was at the helm during the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The uncertain economy and other critical issues also fell during his time in office.

FedEx president and CEO, Raj Subramaniam says: “Mark has helped navigate a complex environment with integrity and foresight. His international expertise was instrumental in the global growth of FedEx.”
