A new state-of-the-art facility for Australia Post has been unveiled on the Gold Coast measuring an investment of AUD$12 million.
The new facility uses advanced sorting technology to improve parcel tracking and integrates various Australia Post services like Express Post, Parcel Post, StarTrack Premium, and the new next-day delivery service, Australia Post Metro, to enhance customer experience.
For the first time, Australia Post’s facility has earned a 5-star Green Star rating. It features a 99kW solar system that can power up to 30% of the facility’s total load, helping to reduce carbon emissions.
Key features of the new Australia Post facility
In October, the postal service opened a facility in Avalon, Victoria. This was done to support Australia Post’s capacity for the burgeoning e-commerce growth in the region.
The Gold Coast property is built to also support capacity. Here’s the specs for the location.
Size and Capacity:
- Modern 15,087m² facility.
- Built to handle increased parcel growth.
Efficiency:
- Processes up to 6,000 parcels per hour.
- Can handle 75,000 parcels a day.
- Capable of processing up to 90,000 parcels during peak periods like Christmas.
Increased demand
Australia Post’s general manager for network operations Rod Barnes says increased demand has seen the Gold Coast become the company’s largest posting zone outside the major capitals, with substantial inbound and outbound products.
“This new facility will expedite processing and improve turnaround times, ensuring quicker delivery of parcels to our customers’ doorsteps,” says Barnes.
Next-day delivery to Adelaide
The postal service is ramping things up to stay ahead in the game. In June, Australia Post expanded its next-day delivery service, Australia Post Metro, to include Adelaide.
This service offers eligible retailers and their customers enhanced speed and reliability for online shopping.
The expansion comes in response to Adelaide’s ongoing embrace of e-commerce, with a notable year-on-year growth in online purchases. Online shopping in Adelaide has seen a 15.2% increase compared to 2019, with nearly 500,000 households making online purchases in the past year.
E-commerce booming in Australia
Asendia is a company that offers a range of international e-commerce and mail delivery services. In its latest ‘market watch’ report, Asendia emphasized the Australian e-commerce market is booming.
Here are some key insights for the Australian market:
- 75% of respondents agree or strongly agree that retailers should prioritize ecological sustainability.
- 60% expect free delivery or seasonal discounts.
- 35% of shoppers use coupons and discounts to discover new products.
