Amazon and Walmart are among those helping relief organizations assist communities in the US affected by the trail of destruction left by Hurricane Helene.
Nearly 1,00km of devastation is what’s left after the deadly hurricane passed through residential areas, leaving almost nothing of the existing infrastructure.
The roads are flooded, telephone and electricity poles are broken, and homes are completely destroyed.
However, several Florida ports have fully reopened, although delays in vessel schedules continue.
Amazon assists Hurricane Helene victims
Amazon mobilized resources to support the region affected by the storm. Working closely with locals and humanitarian organizations, it rapidly delivered critical supplies to people in need.
“Amazon’s logistics infrastructure, inventory, teams, and technology have been activated to provide rapid assistance in crisis areas throughout Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina,” confirms the retailer.
It’s also assisting with aerial photos of the affected regions. “Our AWS cloud computing capabilities are being used to capture high-resolution aerial imagery of affected regions, assisting rescue and relief operations on the ground.”
In partnership with relief organizations, Amazon ships donated items such as water, diapers, and personal hygiene kits to those most in need.
“Amazon is using our logistics and technologies to support first responders who are helping families impacted by this devastating storm,” says Alice Shobe, global director of Amazon community impact.
Walmart helps Hurricane Helene victims with logistics efforts
Walmart has committed to provide $6 million to relief efforts in Florida. The funding has been allocated to food and water donations, as well as essential goods and supplies. Another portion of the funds will be directed toward grants to relief organizations.
“Walmart will help magnify their impact by matching their donations 1-to-1, up to $2.5 million, when customers donate to support hurricane relief at the registers in stores and clubs and on Walmart.com,” the retailer announced in a statement.
